Position Summary:
The OCAD Student Union (OCAD SU) is seeking a dedicated and experienced student with a background in food services for the position of Hot Lunch Cook. The Hot Lunch Cook will work with the Hot Lunch Coordinator to plan and prepare a vegan, pay-what-you-can community drop-in lunch every Tuesday and Thursday on campus. Responsibilities include ingredient procurement, meal preparation, cooking, and serving.
Reports to: Manager of HR & Administration
Working Relationship: Hot Lunch Coordinator, Finance Manager, Director of Diversity & Equity
Rate of Pay & Hours of Work:
$18.38 per hour for 10 hours per week, plus 4% vacation pay and 8% in lieu of benefits pay, minus applicable deductions for income taxes, CPP, and EI. Payment is bi-weekly upon submission of timesheets. Hours of work will be determined based on employee availability and supervisor agreement.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the Hot Lunch Coordinator in planning and preparing two vegan and mostly gluten-free meals per week, ensuring they are nutritious, culturally diverse, and inclusive of options for those with food allergies and sensitivities.
- Follow instructions for meal preparation, cooking, and serving.
- Purchase produce and ingredients from local grocers.
- Follow all food handling, safety, and hygiene standards.
- Maintain a clean and presentable cooking and serving area.
- Handle petty cash and receipts for food, supplies, and equipment purchases.
- Set up cooking and serving stations and arrange the dining area.
- Collect and count donations to the Hot Lunch program.
- Participate in regular meetings with the Hot Lunch team and broader OCAD SU staff.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Food Handler certification from the City of Toronto or willingness to obtain certification within 14 days of employment (OCAD SU will arrange and cover the cost if needed).
- Experience preparing and serving food in large quantities.
- Knowledge of food safety, food allergies, and potential cross-contamination.
- Excellent organization and time management skills.
- Comfort with cash handling and budgeting.
- Proficiency with Google Drive.
- Ability to lift moderate to heavy loads, stand for extended periods, and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Reliability, punctuality, and trustworthiness.
- Knowledge about nutrition and food systems, and food security is an asset.
- Experience in not-for-profit organizations, student organizations, or arts organizations is considered an asset.
- Priority given to candidates with availability on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
