Job Title: Hot Lunch Coordinator
Position Summary:
The OCAD Student Union (OCAD SU) is seeking a dedicated and experienced student with a background in food services to fill the role of Hot Lunch Coordinator. This position involves working with a team of Hot Lunch Cooks to plan and prepare a vegan, pay-what-you-can community drop-in lunch every Tuesday and Thursday on campus. The Hot Lunch Coordinator will manage meal planning, ingredient sourcing, and team coordination to ensure the successful delivery of meals that serve between 50 and 75 people.
Qualifications:
- Food Handler certification from the City of Toronto or willingness to obtain certification within 14 days (OCAD SU will arrange and cover the cost if needed).
- Experience preparing and serving food in large quantities.
- Ability to plan and prepare inclusive and diverse menu options.
- Knowledge of food safety, food allergies, and the potential for allergy cross-contamination.
- Demonstrated leadership and communication skills.
- Excellent organization and time management skills.
- Comfort with cash handling and budgeting.
- Proficiency with Google Drive.
- Ability to lift moderate to heavy loads, stand for extended periods, and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Reliability, punctuality, and trustworthiness.
- Knowledge about nutrition and food systems, and food security is an asset.
- Experience in not-for-profit organizations, student organizations, or arts organizations is considered an asset.
- Priority given to candidates with availability on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Eligibility:
This position is funded by the OCAD University Campus Employment Program for International Students (CEPIS). Candidates must:
- Be an international degree-seeking student (undergraduate or graduate) at OCAD University.
- Have a valid study permit and a Social Insurance Number (SIN).
- Be registered in full-time studies in both fall and winter terms.
- Complete a CEPIS online eligibility check before starting employment.
Responsibilities:
- Plan and prepare two vegan and mostly gluten-free meals per week, ensuring they are nutritious, culturally diverse, and inclusive of options for those with food allergies and sensitivities.
- Ensure meals serve between 50 - 75 people within the allotted budget.
- Provide clear and concise instructions to Hot Lunch Cooks for meal preparation, cooking, and serving.
- Coordinate the purchase of produce and ingredients from local grocers.
- Detail ingredients for each dish for students with food allergies or sensitivities and communicate this information to the OCAD SU Communications Coordinator weekly.
- Ensure compliance with food handling, safety, and hygiene standards.
- Maintain a clean and presentable cooking and serving area.
- Regularly assess supplies and equipment, and plan for necessary purchases or replacements.
- Handle petty cash and receipts for food, supplies, and equipment purchases.
- Set up cooking and serving stations and arrange the dining area.
- Oversee the collection and counting of donations to the Hot Lunch program and submit them to the OCAD SU Finance Manager weekly.
- Promote the Hot Lunch program and other OCAD SU initiatives on campus and online.
- Develop partnerships with University associations, local businesses, and charitable organizations to support and expand the Hot Lunch program.
- Thank donors and sponsors with appropriate recognition such as signage, displaying logos, online acknowledgment, and writing follow-up letters and thank-you cards.
- Participate in regular meetings with the Hot Lunch team and broader OCAD SU staff.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Rate of Pay & Hours of Work:
- $18.49 per hour for 15 hours per week, plus 4% vacation pay and 8% in lieu of benefits pay.
- Payment is bi-weekly upon submission of timesheets.
- Hours of work will be determined based on employee availability, typically involving Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Reports to: Manager of HR & Administration
Working Relationship:
- Collaborates with Hot Lunch Cooks, Finance Manager, and Director of Diversity & Equity.
